Disney Life Lessons: Finding Dory

Welcome to another edition of Disney Life Lessons!   This segment is all about how in every single Disney movie, there are a ton of life lessons to be learned (and a quick review of course).   Every single member of our family shares what they learn.  It's quickly becoming one of my favorite segments!

Finding Nemo was a very loved movie in our family, so we anxiously awaited for the sequel, Finding Dory, from the time it was announced!  It did not disappoint any of us!  I personally relate to Dory, because I am always forgetting everything I feel like!  It had a ton of funny parts, and a few sad parts too!  The animations of this movie truly amaze me at how realistic the water and the movement of the water look (do not forget to take a few minutes and really appreciate that!)  Although the movie was great, and we will be owning this one when it comes out, it did have some pretty tough story lines!  IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE, YOU MAY NOT WANT TO READ THE NEXT PARAGRAPH.

Dory lost her family because of her forgetfulness, meaning it was her fault.   Her parents however never gave up looking for her and in the end, found her.   Because of this, this movie may be very hard for kids who struggle with self doubt, abandonment issues, or who are in the foster system or have been adopted.  For more detail on this, I would recommend clicking HERE and/or HERE for some great articles on that.  If you think your kid(s) struggle with any of that, I would suggest watching it with him/her or setting aside time after alone to discuss it and how it made the child feel.

Let's move on to what life lessons my family walked away with from this movie!

TYLER (13 years):

  • If you set your mind to it, you can do it. (Dory found her way home)
  • Family will always love you
LILLIE (12 years):
  • If you have a disability, you can overcome it (she suffers from a pretty tough learning disability)
  • Never give up
  • Family is not just blood, family is who loves you and cares for you.
CHLOE (10 years):
  • Always believe that you can do it.
  • Family forgives.

SETH (10 years old):
  • Even if you have people tell you you aren't able to do something, do it anyways.
  • Never think that your family will forget you, family never forgets.
  • Family will always help you when you need help.

JEREMY:
There is always another way to accomplish something.
TAMARA:
It is OK to be angry, but it is not OK to use hurtful words when you are angry, those words can stick into peoples minds.

WHAT ARE SOME LIFE LESSONS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY LEARNED FROM FINDING DORY?
We would love to hear them in the comments!

Tusker House Character Meal at Animal Kingdom

I am a firm believer in getting the Dining Plan on all Disney World trips.  The best way to get the most out of the Dining Plan, is to book at least one character meal a day!  This way not only are you getting an amazing all you can eat meal, more for your money, you also get special quality time with the characters without waiting in the long lines!!! When I planned our recent trip to Disney World, I was excited to try out Tusker House because I had hear so many wonderful things about it!  I was so so so pleased with that restaurant!   Out of all of the character meals we did on that trip, I think I enjoyed their selection of food the best!  Click HERE to view their whole menu.   Everything I tried was truly delicious!  There were three sides that I kept going back for (seriously, I probably went back for more 6 times and I am not a big eater!) and those were the Pearl Couscous with Sweet Basil, the Sauteed Green Beans, and the Sweet Plantains!  The kids even went back for more helping on their plates then usual, the food, all of it, was just THAT GOOD!!!  Sadly, I was so wrapped up in eating my food and enjoying the amazing atmosphere, I forgot to take any pictures of the food myself!   (Bad blogger, I know, I am so sorry!).   So here are some I got off of Disney's site and google images:
Tusker House is located in the Africa section of Animal Kingdom.  Tucked away between the safari and the Lion King show.
Beautiful decor!!!  You fill like you are in the middle of an african market!

Now let's talk about the character interactions!  This restaurant is at the top of my list for that!  You will get to meet and spend time with Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Donald Duck, and Daisy Duck....all in safari themed outfits.  I love that the character's come by and spend quality time with each table!  Joking with them, signing autographs, truly making each table feel important and special!  I feel like we got the most time to interact with the characters at this location than the others.  You can see by all the pictures below (and we have more!) how much time they really do spend loving on you.

Daisy was flirting with Seth, which really cracked both the boys up!

Every so often, the character's stop interacting and they start playing music and they do a parade with all the children in that section!  Most character dining interactions do this, but for whatever reason, all the kids (not just our own) really seemed to be filled with joy and participated more!   Even our 13 year old got in to the action there!  I truly loved seeing my kids dancing, singing, and clapping away behind their beloved characters!  The smiles and laughter were truly priceless!

Tusker House is truly on the top of list of places I recommend you visit on your trip!  It is perfect for all ages and I promise you, you won't forget it!  Be sure to come back to this blog and post in the comments what your favorite food from there was too!!!!!

Disney Life Lessons: Pete's Dragon (live action)

One of the millions of reasons I love Disney so much, is I truly believe every single movie that comes out has a lot of really good life lessons we can all learn!  Because of that reason, I am starting a new segment, Disney Life Lessons, will I will feature a movie and my family (all 6 of us) will share the lessons we think we can take away from that movie!

This past weekend, we went and saw the new live Action version of Pete's Dragon.  The animated version was one of my favorite's as a kid (and I admit I have not shown any of our kids that version yet) so I was excited to share this movie with them all!  Let me warn you, this version is a serious tear jerker!   Im talking like BOO HOO tears all over the place!  If it wasn't for me consoling Lillie (the 12 year old) I would have went into full out ugly crying.   Even with that being said, it was an amazing movie!  I loved every second of it and will definitely be owning it when it comes out on DVD/Blu Ray!  We did not see it in 3D, but I think if you are able to, this may be one of the movies that it would be worth the extra money to do so!  (3D gives myself and my daughter headaches so we avoid when we can, plus the cost for 6 of us gets high!).  I think they did very good at staying to the true original story line while making it a great movie for current times too!

With that being said, let's talk about all of the many life lessons my family believes you can learn from this movie!

TYLER (13 years):  Don't let revenge get in the way of your family

LILLIE (12 years):

  • You can't always hold on, sometimes you have to let go.
  • You can't judge a book by it's cover.  People were judging Elliott.
  • Family isn't who your born into, it's who loves you.
  • Don't be selfish and think only of yourself.   That can sometimes put other people in danger for your own personal gain.   Don't let selfish acts lead your life.
  • Every second is priceless.
CHLOE (10 years):  If someone is trying to help you, don't run away.  Accept help from others.

SETH (10 years):
  • Because you can't see it, doesn't mean its not there.  Always believe!
  • If you hear a huge roar, STAY BACK! (OK, this made me laugh)
  • Don't try to hurt something if you don't know if it's gonna hurt you or if it's dangerous.  It's not right to hurt something for no reason.

JEREMY:  Don't take family for granted.
TAMARA:  You can survive a lot more than you think.  (To which SETH added as long as you have someone to help you),

WHAT LESSON'S DID YOUR FAMILY LEARN FROM THIS MOVIE?

THE GREAT MOUSE EAR SEARCH: Mouseketeer Ears by Main Street Darling

I started the GREAT MOUSE EAR SEARCH because if there is one thing a true Disney Fanatic can never get enough of, is mouse ears!  Many of us would wear them every day if we could!  I love bringing you some of the best Mouse Ear Designers I can find.   Occasionally, I come across a designer that is so original and so amazing, it floors me!   Main Street Darling is one of those designers!  I love that they design original Mouseketeer style ear hats!  These are great for all genders, but let's face it, our male Disney fanatics do not get as many choices for Mouse Ears and these are THE BEST FOR BOYS I HAVE SEEN!!!!  Yes, I said it!  THE BEST!  My 13 year old, was IN LOVE with these ears!   So cool enough even for the teenagers!   He actually left them on a bench and someone took them they were so cool, so we will be having to order another pair soon!  Danielle, the head designer is very sweet to work with!  She can do custom work if you are interested in that as well!   And as most designers, she does the headbands as well, so be sure to check out her Etsy shop at https://www.etsy.com/shop/MainStreetDarling

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MAKING MOUSE EARS?
I used to go to Walt Disney World all the time when I lived in Florida and I always wanted to wear ears, but the parks only carry so many. I ended up customizing a pair with my roommate at the time for our costumes for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and it kind of took off from there. I started making my own ears for special events, like Star Wars Weekends and Dapper Day, then I realized this was something other people also wanted. I know there is a huge market on Etsy for custom mouse ears, but I decided to throw my hat into the ring and see what happens! So far it has been overwhelmingly positive and this has been a great creative outlet for me. Plus, it doesn't really get better than making people happy with the things you create. Hopefully, I can keep doing this for a while longer and continue making new, exciting ears for everyone to enjoy!

DO YOU HAND MAKE EVERYTHING?
I make almost everything by hand! The only items I purchase are the headbands and ear hats. As for the ears, bows, and any embellishments, I do all the sewing, stuffing, and painting, you name it! It makes it so much easier to customize everything for each individual customer who visits my shop.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST POPULAR SELLING ITEM?
My most popular item is actually a tie between my Darth Maul inspired ear hat and my Pearl Mouse Ear Headband. Both are embellished, one has handmade clay horns and the other had tons of sparkle!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ITEM TO MAKE AND WHY?
I absolutely love making the ear hats. It gives me an opportunity to really understand that character and make something that I think that character would want to wear. I specifically love making the Darth Maul inspired hat because that was one of the first hats I ever made for myself and I made it for Star Wars Weekends when Ray Park, who plays Darth Maul in Episode I, was visiting. I ended up making two pairs, one for me and one for him as a gift, and my pair is autographed by him. It was such a special moment for me that whenever I make that hat for someone else, I just hope they can have a magical moment with their hat that I send them.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU COME UP WITH NEW DESIGNS?
I am constantly coming up with new designs! I have been focusing a lot on headbands right now and I'm about to release a line of character bow ties, but I am hoping to get some new hat designs out there soon!

DO YOU HAVE ANY FUN OR TOUCHING CUSTOMER STORIES YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH US?
One of my favorite things in this world is Star Wars and Walt Disney World just hosted their inaugural Star Wars Half Marathon - Dark Side weekend. Since I have a lot of Dark Side hats in my shop, I got a few orders from runners looking to complete their running costumes. I ended up hand delivering one to a runner and had a few others out on the course. I was also running in the races, so to be on the course looking out for my ears was a big moment for me. I ship off ears all the time, but to actually see people in them and be a part of such a big weekend was absolutely amazing!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU GET TO GO TO DISNEY?

I am an Annual Passholder to both coasts, so I would say I go pretty often! Living in Southern California, I get to go to Disneyland at least once a week. However, Florida is my home and I love visiting my friends there so I go as often as I can even if that is only two or three times a year.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU HAVE TO DO EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU VISIT DISNEY?
I have to get a Mint Julep at Disneyland! It's not a complete day unless I get a Mint Julep in New Orleans Square! I can promise you, I have gone into the park just to get a Mint Julep and left after that. Other than a Mint Julep, I have to see Mickey and the Magical Map. Some days it isn't showing, but I think that show is so fun and inspiring that I go as often as I can.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE DISNEY MEMORY EVER?
My favorite Disney memory is probably my wedding last year. I got married in the Wedding Pavilion, which has been a lifelong dream of mine. I remember being little riding the monorail past the Pavilion and telling my dad "One day, I'm going to get married there," and he would just respond "Yeah, ok sure, Danielle." I got lucky and my husband is a big Disney fan and he thought the same thing when he was little, so we planned the perfect wedding with some Disney magic and had the best time. I made a special pair of ears to match my dress and really just felt like a real life Disney Princess the whole time. It really doesn't get better than enjoying Disney in your very own princess ballgown and Prince Charming by your side!

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE DISNEY CHARACTER AND WHY?
My favorite Disney Character is Merida. I've always loved the more independent characters, especially the princesses, like Belle and Ariel, but Merida takes it to a whole new level. She is in charge of her fate and she isn't afraid of going after what she wants. Every day I strive to be brave like her and keep in mind whats important, like my family, and to take control of my future and my happiness. She is a huge inspiration for me!
